Bazi

In archaizing king-list tradition Bazi appears in the Tell Leilan recension of the Sumerian King List as one of the 'kings of Mari' with an assigned reign and the professional epithet 'leatherworker'; modern scholarship treats this as a legendary, likely non-historical placement. Separately, an Old Babylonian composition known as the Song of Bazi presents him as a god who gains cultic recognition after proving his strength by overcoming enemies; in that text Ea (Enki) is addressed as his father, a filial link that integrates Bazi into Mesopotamian divine genealogy and associates him with the ritual-magic network of Ea.

Surviving materials provide no detailed anthropomorphic or iconographic description. The Song of Bazi contains a simile comparing him to a ram, but no statue, visual portrayal, or detailed bodily features are preserved in the cited sources.

The Song of Bazi calls Bazi 'the god who surveys the human race, who knows the minds of the wicked and the just,' attributing to him oversight and discernment of human moral states. The text links him to magic and exorcistic practice and narrates his establishment of a temple after demonstrating his strength; his filial tie to Ea further aligns him with domains of incantation and ritual knowledge. Beyond these attested functions the sources do not ascribe further powers.
