Bruno Mannheim is a recurring fictional organized-crime boss in DC Comics and derivative media, leader of Intergang and a recurring antagonist of Superman and allied heroes. Across continuities he functions as a power broker who sometimes employs or is empowered by Apokoliptian/New God elements (notably Darkseid and agents such as Kanto).

Origin

Publication origin: Created by Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #139 (July 1971) and is presented in source materials as the son of crime figure Moxie Mannheim. In-universe biography (across reboots): Mannheim is depicted as a successor in a crime dynasty who rises to lead Intergang; in some continuities (notably the 52 miniseries) he claims to have been 'reborn' through Darkseid's influence and undergoes a narrative arc including psychopathy, cannibalism, and later apparent survival and mutation into a giant. Different continuities and adaptations (Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, 52, The New 52, animated series, television) present variations on these elements.

Appearance

Descriptions vary by continuity and adaptation. Sources note the nickname "Ugly" Mannheim; classic comic portrayals are generally depicted as white while the Superman & Lois television adaptation portrays him as African-American. Specific, consistent physical measurements or detailed facial descriptions are not provided in available summaries. In at least one comic continuity he later survives apparent death and is revealed to have mutated into a giant.

Abilities

Primarily an organizer and leader: Mannheim's chief 'ability' is command of Intergang and skill in organized criminal activity. In some storylines he has used Apokoliptian technology or weapons (e.g., pyro-granulate, weapons supplied by Kanto in Superman: The Animated Series) and at times acts to further Darkseid's aims, claiming rebirth from Darkseid in 52. Narrative accounts describe extreme brutality including cannibalism (in the 52 storyline) and conducting sacrificial acts tied to Intergang's adoption of the Crime Bible; in certain arcs he is physically mutated into a giant, giving him enhanced physical size and threat in those specific stories. He is otherwise portrayed as a human criminal vulnerable to conventional means of opposition.
