Chukwu

Traditional Igbo thought presents Chukwu not as one god among many but as the originating, creative principle (Okike) that brings the universe and living beings into existence and issues forth lesser spiritual forces. From Chukwu proceed personal chi (assigned at conception) and the alusi (arusi/aloshi) that govern specific domains; these lesser forces are understood as emanations, servants, or manifestations of Chukwu rather than independent deities. Chukwu is described as without beginning or end and as the ultimate authority over earthly and spiritual realms.

Source materials do not provide an anthropomorphic or consistent corporeal description of Chukwu; Chukwu is described as a transcendent, unlimited creative reality. Traditional accounts point to manifestations or aspects—commonly cited in Nri thought as Anyanwu (sun/eye), Agbala (earthly fertility), Chi (personal procreative force), and Okike (creative principle)—through which Chukwu is perceived, but these are aspects or instruments of Chukwu rather than literal bodily parts.

Chukwu is credited with creation and ongoing sustenance of the universe and all living beings (the creative principle, Okike). Chukwu is the source of personal destiny by assigning each person a chi at conception; human will and chi interact (expressed in the proverb Onye kwe, chi ya ekwe). Chukwu is characterized in sources as omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient in theological description; practical communication with Chukwu is normally indirect, mediated through alusi, personal chi, diviners (afa), and institutional intermediaries such as the Arochukwu oracle (Ibini Ukpabi), which historically spoke in Chukwu's name and carried wide adjudicative authority.
