Culhwch

In the medieval tale Culhwch and Olwen, Culhwch is born after his mother Goleuddydd is frightened by a herd of swine; a swineherd finds the infant in the pigs' run, and the tale provides an etiological explanation of his name (cul 'narrow' + hwch 'sow'). He is cursed by a stepmother such that he may marry no one except Olwen, daughter of the giant Ysbaddaden. To win Olwen he seeks out his cousin Arthur at Celliwig, summons Arthur's aid, and undertakes the anoethau—a list of impossible tasks imposed by Ysbaddaden—among them hunting the monstrous boar Twrch Trwyth and recovering the imprisoned Mabon ap Modron.

Medieval sources supply no sustained physical portrait of Culhwch beyond noting his noble descent—he is described as being of 'gentle lineage'—and his origin episode (being found in a pigs' run) which functions as a narrative marker of unusual birth and social identity. Later popular retellings may add imagery, but such elaborations are not present in the cited medieval summaries.

Culhwch's capacities are those of a mortal heroic petitioner and questing figure rather than innate supernatural power. He mobilises kinship and patronage (notably his cousin King Arthur and Arthur's warriors), endures and pursues lengthy mythic enterprises (the anoethau), takes part in martial action (joining assaults on Ysbaddaden's castle and, alongside Bedwyr and the enchanter Menw, wounding Ysbaddaden), and participates in complex tasks such as hunting Twrch Trwyth and securing Mabon ap Modron. He relies on allies, enchanters, and collective effort rather than magical invulnerability.
