In published DC Comics continuity, the most prominent Cyborg Superman is Hank Henshaw, originally an astronaut whose exposure to radiation after a spacecraft disaster deteriorated his body and transformed him into an energy being; his wife Terri (a fellow crew member) dies in that event. Henshaw later recreates a cyborg body in Superman's image using the birthing matrix that carried Superman as an infant, granting the construct organic parts genetically resembling Superman, and he impersonates Superman following the Man of Steel's death. Across reboots, the Cyborg Superman mantle has been occupied by other figures (notably Zor-El in The New 52 continuity), with motivations and details shifting between publications.
The Cyborg Superman is depicted as a humanoid fusion of organic tissue and visible cybernetic components. In Henshaw's incarnation he recreated a body resembling Superman by incorporating organic material sourced from the birthing matrix that carried Superman as an infant alongside mechanical prosthetics and systems. The character's remains (for example a severed head) have been recovered and interrogated in the comics, indicating separable technological components.
Described in sources as a 'technomorph,' Hank Henshaw can extend his consciousness into machines and electronic systems, including Green Lantern power rings and their power batteries, allowing him to inhabit and control technological vectors rather than merely manipulating them. When embodied in a cyborg body that incorporates Kryptonian-derived organic parts, he gains abilities similar to Superman's while purportedly editing out certain weaknesses. He has led and upgraded the Manhunters, coordinated large-scale technological modification, and engaged in deception and impersonation (notably framing Superman and collaborating with Mongul to destroy Coast City).
Weaknesses
- conditionseparation of life force from body
- conditioncontainment / physical isolation (shielding, trapping behind barriers)
- otherdestruction or grievous injury to host chassis (explosion, crushing) while contained
Wards
- conditioninterrogation and custody by institutional authorities (Oa interrogation of recovered components)
- conditionseparation or isolation of technological vectors (neutralizing rings/batteries and isolating machines)
- conditiondirect opposition by the genuine Superman or coordinated Green Lantern actions
