Origin

The danavas are genealogically defined as the offspring of the primordial mother Danu and the sage Kashyapa, a daughter of Daksha. As a branch of the asuras they are sibling to other asura-classes (notably the daityas). In Vedic layers (e.g., Rigveda) some prominent figures associated with Danu (such as Vṛtra) perform cosmogonic adversary-roles that must be overcome by Indra; later epic and Puranic texts develop the danavas into a more consistently oppositional group.

Appearance

Class-level descriptions do not record a consistent distinctive physical form for danavas; classical sources note that daityas and danavas share physical features with the devas. Many accounts emphasize that supernatural beings—both those regarded as 'good' and 'evil'—possess maya (illusion or magical power) enabling changes of form, so reported appearances are often mutable rather than fixed.

Abilities

Sources attribute to danavas the possession of maya (illusion/magic) and diverse roles in myth: as adversaries to the devas (for example Vṛtra opposing Indra in a cosmogonic struggle), as culture-creators or skilled artisans (e.g., the architect Mayasura, Maya Dānava), and as actors who can interfere in ritual or performance (the Natyashastra recounts danavas freezing a dance performance). While later literature tends to frame them as destructive or obstructive to sacrificial order, earlier Vedic material shows overlap in actions between danavas and devas.
