Eurycyda

Eurycyda

Lesserwell-documentedGreek mythic-historical genealogyElis (Peloponnese)
Origin

Eurycyda appears in the genealogical traditions of Elis as a daughter of King Endymion and thus a member of the royal house of Elis. In the surviving accounts she is named as the mother, by the god Poseidon, of Eleius, the eponymous founder whose name is applied to the region and people called the Eleans. Sources place her in the mythic generation following Aethlius and Endymion and list her among siblings Aetolus, Epeius, and Paeon (and possibly Naxos). Some traditions and authors use the variant name Eurypyle, and the maternal names of Endymion's children vary across sources (Asterodia, Chromia, or Hyperippe are listed in differing accounts).

Appearance

Classical and modern summaries supplying the surviving material give no physical or iconographic description of Eurycyda. She is attested only in genealogical lists and founding narratives; the sources do not describe her looks, garments, attributes, or any cult imagery.

Abilities

The extant sources do not attribute supernatural powers or specific mythical deeds to Eurycyda herself. Her narrative function is etiological and dynastic: by bearing Eleius to Poseidon she links a mortal royal house to divine parentage, thereby conferring a semi-divine origin on the eponymous founder and justifying civic and ethnic identity for the Eleans. Beyond this genealogical role there are no recorded behaviors, miracles, or magical capacities associated with her in the provided texts.
