Gil-galad

Accounts in Tolkien's writings vary. In The Silmarillion as published, Gil-galad is presented as an Elf of a royal house of Beleriand raised in the Falas under Círdan; some sources state he was sent to Círdan as a child during the Siege of Angband and treat him as a scion of the earlier Noldorin kings. Later Tolkien writings proposed a different parentage making him son of Orodreth (descended from Finarfin), but Christopher Tolkien retained the Fingon-lineage in The Silmarillion's published genealogy; the secondary reporting thus records at least two variant textual traditions about his parentage.

Direct physical description in the cited sources is minimal. Textual and illustrative materials associate Gil-galad with a named spear, Aeglos, and with a shield bearing star imagery: a poem fragment in The Fellowship of the Ring references stars 'mirrored in his silver shield', and Tolkien's sketches of heraldic devices for Gil-galad include stars. No detailed bodily portrait (height, hair, facial features) is provided in the cited materials.

Sources attribute to Gil-galad distinguished leadership, martial skill, and political discernment rather than overt innate magical powers. He founded and ruled a realm in Lindon, forbade the disguised Sauron (Annatar) entry into Lindon, received two of the Three Rings from Celebrimbor for safekeeping and later entrusted Narya to Círdan and Vilya to Elrond, and co-commanded Elven forces in the Last Alliance with Elendil. His death in close combat with Sauron demonstrates both his frontline role and mortal vulnerability; the texts do not ascribe to him supernatural powers beyond those typical of great Elf-lords in Tolkien's legendarium.
