Högne

Högne appears in medieval Old Norse narrative sources as a regional king within the legendary-historical landscape of Scandinavia rather than as a supernatural origin figure. In Heimskringla and associated summaries he is presented as king of Östergötland who, together with his ally and relative by marriage Granmar of Södermanland, resists the purges carried out by Ingjald Ill-ruler. In the Volsunga saga and the Helgakviða Hundingsbana poems of the Poetic Edda he appears as a dynastic actor whose daughter Sigrun (also named Hilda in some accounts) has politically consequential betrothal ties; these narrative appearances place him in interlocking cycles of marriage, raid, and revenge that construct a shared legendary past.

The primary sources do not supply a sustained physical portrait of Högne. Saga and Eddic passages emphasize his social rank and martial comportment—kingly role, commander of forces, and father of notable offspring—rather than detailed bodily description. A later retelling cites a poetic line praising his heroic heart and valor, but this functions as literary praise rather than an anatomically specific depiction.

Högne's 'abilities' in the sources consist of political and military agency typical of saga kings: commanding forces, conducting raids into neighboring provinces, forming marital and military alliances (notably with Granmar), and participating in pitched battles such as those connected to the Helgi Hundingsbane cycle. Narrative sequences report successful defenses against Ingjald's massacres and active raiding of Swedish provinces with his son (named variably across sources). He is portrayed as valorous in battle, but in the Helgi cycle his forces are defeated and he is slain in combat in some versions; other traditions preserve his lineage through sons who survive and pursue vengeance.
