Kuafu (夸父)

In the mythic tradition Kuafu (夸父) appears as a giant figure who decides to chase and catch the Sun. Sources present him both as an individual giant and as a name applied to a people (Kuafu-shi); certain genealogical notes in the literature describe Kuafu as a grandson of Houtu, and other passages place the Kuafu-clan among tribal actors in mythic conflict narratives such as the Battle of Banquan. The primary narrative preserved in the accessible sources frames Kuafu’s enterprise—pursuing the Sun across the sky—as a singular mythic event with cosmological and social consequences rather than as a recurring apparition.

The tradition describes Kuafu simply as a giant; narratives emphasize his colossal scale through his capacity to pursue the Sun from east to west and through the landscape effects attributed to his actions. Specific bodily details are not standardized in the cited sources. Variant accounts record that his wooden club sprouted into a vast peach forest (the Deng Forest) and that in one version Kuafu’s body became or was transformed into a mountain range associated with present-day Lingbao.

Narratives attribute to Kuafu prodigious endurance and landscape-altering effects: he pursues the Sun from east to west and, in doing so, is said to have drained the Yellow River and the Wei River (and, by extension in some tellings, waters crossing his path) in a frantic attempt to quench his thirst. Despite these feats, the sources state that the rivers could not satisfy him and he died of dehydration; his death and possessions then produce lasting geographical features (a peach forest from his club; in some versions a mountain range from his body). The available materials do not ascribe recurrent supernatural interventions, ritual powers, or a priesthood to Kuafu beyond these mythic actions.
