Origin

Lares Familaires are part of the cluster of Roman domestic divinities (Dii Familiares) identified in classical and modern overviews rather than a single creation myth. Ancient commentators and later summaries variously render Lares as 'heroes' or 'daimones,' and etymological discussion in the sources links the name 'Lar' to Etruscan lar/lars/larth ('lord'), though the origin remains uncertain. The household Lar emerged within Roman domestic practice as the place-bound guardian spirit of a home, relationally distinct from traveling household spirits such as the Penates.

Appearance

In domestic lararia the Lares are typically depicted as youthful, lithe figures, often shown in pairs flanking a central togate figure (commonly interpreted as the paterfamilias). Iconography commonly shows Lares wearing short tunics and garlands, sometimes depicted standing on tiptoe and offering a patera or rhyton; they also appear holding symbols such as a cornucopia in some depictions. Lararia frequently include painted or sculpted Lares alongside a central togate worshipper and images of bearded or crested snakes, the latter being associated with the family genius or generative power.

Abilities

Lares Familiares are cultically understood to influence events within their specific sphere (the household) and to care for the welfare and prosperity of its members (free and enslaved). They reward proper devotion and offerings and may withhold aid or favor if neglected. Attested ritual practice includes moving a Lar’s image or statue into the presence of household events (feasts, weddings) to invoke protection, indicating their presence is materially mediated and ritually relocatable. Anecdotal literary evidence (Plautus) frames them as morally responsive agents able to act on behalf of the household where piety merits intervention.
