Ampelos

Two literary traditions recorded in the sources give Ampelos different fates that explain natural or celestial phenomena. In Nonnus’s account Ampelos is a beautiful satyr youth beloved by Dionysus who boasts to Selene; Selene sends a gadfly to spur a bull that gores him to death, and Dionysus transforms his corpse into the first grapevine and makes wine from his blood. In Ovid’s account (summarized in the sources) Ampelos is a reckless youth who falls while picking grapes and is lifted by Liber (Dionysus) to the heavens as one of the stars of Vindemitor (Vindiatrix / Boötes).

In the sources Ampelos is described in Nonnus as a 'beautiful satyr youth'—an attractive young male of the Dionysian retinue—and in Ovid as a reckless youth whose youthfulness and behavior are emphasized rather than detailed physical traits. The provided materials also note that the name (in variant use) can be applied to vine-associated hamadryads or dryads, but the sources do not claim a specific nymph-like appearance for the individuated Ampelos.
