Araṇyānī

Araṇyānī is attested in the oldest stratum of Vedic literature. The primary attestation is the Aranyani Suktam (Rigveda 10.146), where she appears as the personified presence and owner-inhabitant of the forest. Later scholarship notes her continued conceptual resonance in regional forest-deity figures, but the hymn in the Rigveda is the principal textual origin provided in the sources.

In the Rigvedic hymn she is described as elusive and fond of quiet glades, seldom seen but heard by the tinkling of anklets with bells; she is also portrayed as a dancer. The supplied sources record little later standardized iconography and note that temples dedicated to her are rare, though a modern shrine called the Aranya Devi Temple in Arrah, Bihar is mentioned in secondary summaries.

Textual attestations portray Araṇyānī as an autonomous forest-dweller who wanders remote places fearlessly, feeds both humans and animals without tilling the land, and is sometimes regarded in later remarks as associated with the Kalpavriksha (the divine wish-fulfilling tree). Scholarly summaries compare her role to later local forest guardian figures (for example Banbibi, Vanadevata, Vanadurga) but do not present prescriptive supernatural powers beyond the Vedic hymn's descriptive features.
