In Marvel's fictional history the Zemo barony began in 1480 in Zeulniz when Harbin Zemo, a granary charge man and ministerialis, borrowed a suit of armor and alone defeated a raiding horde of Slav invaders; the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire elevated him to nobility and awarded Zeulniz, establishing the hereditary line of barons that continues into modern Marvel narratives.

Because the entry denotes a hereditary title across centuries, appearance varies by holder and era. Early barons are depicted with martial and armored imagery tied to the foundation legend; 20th-century holders such as Heinrich Zemo are depicted as human figures in period-appropriate military/scientific attire (Heinrich as a scientist associated with the Nazi era). Modern portrayals of Helmut Zemo include civilian or villainous costume elements (notably a purple mask in modern adaptations) but no single canonical physical form applies to the title across holders.

The barons are human actors whose capabilities depend on the individual. Heinrich Zemo (12th Baron) is described as a brilliant, sadistic scientific genius and one of the top scientists in the Nazi Party, associated with inventions and chemical/weapon use in wartime narratives.
