Brown Lady of Raynham Hall

The apparition is commonly linked in the sources to Dorothy Walpole (1686–1726), a woman of the family associated with Raynham Hall; later tellings argue she was confined and died (often noted as of smallpox in some accounts) and that her unhappy domestic history explains the persistent manifestation. Mary Wortley Montagu's contemporary comments and later family stories introduce alternative details about entrapment and scandal in Dorothy's life; the legend crystallized through 19th-century eyewitness reports (first noted 1835) and was popularized by subsequent retellings and the claimed Country Life photograph taken at Raynham Hall in 1936.

Reports typically describe a female figure in a brown brocade dress (hence the name). Eyewitness narratives vary: an 1835 account recorded the dated brown dress and, in one witness's telling, notably dark or hollow facial features; Captain Frederick Marryat's later retelling describes a figure matching a family portrait and carrying a lamp. The 1936 Country Life photographers described seeing 'a vapoury form gradually assuming the appearance of a woman' on the main staircase. Specific features such as 'empty eye-sockets' are attested in particular witnesses rather than as consistent characteristics across all reports.

The apparition manifests visually and episodically within Raynham Hall, especially on staircases, corridors and in the room where Dorothy's portrait hung. Accounts describe it halting and becoming visible to observers, sometimes carrying a light. Reports include strong emotional reactions by witnesses and staff (fear, flight) and at least one anecdote of an occupant firing a revolver at the figure (Captain Marryat), after which the apparition is reported to have 'disappeared' in that telling. The phenomenon has persisted in reports from the 19th into the 20th century and became widely discussed following the claimed 1936 photograph; the photographic claim has since been subject to re-examination in paranormal and skeptical literature.
