Origin

Created by writer Stan Lee and artist/co-writer Jack Kirby, the original team first appeared in X-Men #4 (March 1964) as Magneto's allies opposing the X-Men. The group was initially called the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants; later writers reframed or dropped the word "Evil," describing its early use as ironic or a corny 1960s creative choice. Across decades of publication the Brotherhood has been re-formed under different leaders (notably Magneto and Mystique) and with shifting rosters and aims, producing multiple canonical incarnations and alternate-universe variants.

Appearance

No single uniform appearance applies to the Brotherhood as a whole; visual presentation varies by incarnation and roster. Individual members possess distinctive costumes and looks (for example Magneto's armored helmet and cloak, Mystique's blue skin and shapeshifting presentation, Toad's amphibian features), and many versions feature members in coordinated costumes typical of comic-book teams. Bases of operation have included places such as an abandoned factory in the Appalachian Mountains and other locations in U.S. settings; animated and film adaptations further diversify visual motifs.

Abilities

The Brotherhood's capacities derive from the mutant powers of its individual members rather than from an inherent group superpower: examples include electromagnetic control (Magneto), super-speed (Quicksilver), probability/chaos-influencing reality effects (Scarlet Witch), leaping/jumping and agility (Toad), illusion creation (Mastermind), and brute strength or mass-based powers (Blob, Avalanche). Organizationally, the Brotherhood engages in militant action, organized violence, and terrorist tactics in pursuit of mutant supremacy or revolution against humans, and also functions as a haven for outcast mutants recruited because of shared experiences of anti-mutant prejudice.
