Cleocharia

Cleocharia

Lesserwell-documentedAncient Greek mythologyLaconia (Sparta / Lacedaemon)
Origin

According to the surviving summaries preserved in modern reference works, Cleocharia is a naiad of Laconia who became the consort of King Lelex of Lelegia and is presented in genealogies as mother of Eurotas, from whom descend Sparta and the Lacedaemon line. Variant accounts recorded in the literary testimonia cited by later compilers attribute different filiation: some versions list Lelex's children as Myles and Polycaon, with Myles then named as father of Eurotas rather than Cleocharia being Eurotas's direct mother. These variant genealogical strands are preserved in the patchwork of ancient sources summarized by modern references (see Pausanias and Apollodorus as the ancient testimonia underlying those summaries, as indicated in the cited encyclopedic entries).

Appearance

No description of Cleocharia's physical appearance, attributes, or iconography is provided in the cited modern summaries; she is identified only by her classification as a naiad (freshwater nymph) and by her genealogical role.

Abilities

The cited sources do not attribute active supernatural deeds, distinct powers, or behavioral characteristics to Cleocharia beyond her status as a naiad and her role in mythic genealogy. Her functional role in the tradition is reproductive/genealogical—becoming queen-consort to Lelex and bearing (or being in the ancestral line of) Eurotas—rather than the performance of recorded miracles or exploits.
