Described variably as a very large, plant-like humanoid: depictions range from a giant with a large mushroom-like hat to an entity appearing like a ficus (tree-like form). Its physiology is characterized as cryptobotanic, and mushrooms throughout the forest are described as aspects or manifestations of the creature.

Kayeri are said to feed solely on cows and are strong enough to carry bovines away; their activity is linked to fungal ecology — they are said to appear after significant rain (like mushrooms) and to be often dormant after prolonged sunshine. Because mushrooms are described as aspects of the creature, its presence may be distributed across the forest mycological growths. The only specific lethal vulnerability recorded is that they can be killed by shooting them in the kidney with a bone-tipped arrow.
