Apasmara

Apasmara does not appear in the available sources as the subject of a single narrative birth-story; rather, the figure arises from overlapping theological and medical registers. Linguistically and medically the term apasmāra (literally 'loss of memory') denotes neurological disorders in Ayurvedic texts. Iconographically and theologically the personified dwarf-demon appears in Shaivite imagery—especially under Shiva's foot as Natarāja or Dakṣiṇāmūrti—functioning as the embodied obstacle of ignorance and ahamkāra that must be eternally subdued rather than destroyed to preserve the cosmic balance that allows moksha.

Apasmara is depicted in temple sculpture and iconography as a diminutive, dwarf-like human figure clutched under the right foot of Shiva in the Natarāja and Dakṣiṇāmūrti forms. Descriptions in the sources characterize him as a small, grotesque or 'horrible little' figure; some iconographic variants are noted in which the dwarf holds or is associated with a snake, but this is presented as an occasional attribute rather than a universal detail.

Sources do not attribute agentive magical feats to Apasmara; instead his 'abilities' are symbolic: he personifies the metaphysical condition of forgetfulness, ego (ahamkāra), and the obscuration of self-knowledge that facilitates rebirth (samsāra). In the medical register, apasmāra denotes seizure- and memory-related neurological disorders (classical types named by doshic etiology appear in Ayurvedic texts) and thus 'behaves' as the clinical manifestations described there (seizures, memory loss, syncope-like states).
