Aura (paranormal)

The modern esoteric notion of the aura emerged in late-19th and early-20th-century Western occultism, especially through the writings of Charles Webster Leadbeater and the Theosophical Society, who blended ideas drawn from Indian Tantric notions of chakras with a Victorian occult anatomy. Leadbeater's illustrations and moral-evolution schema popularized a layered, colored subtle-body around persons; later New Age authors and holistic practitioners simplified and commercialized these ideas into systems of aura interpretation, chakra-clearing practices, and aura photography businesses. The English term itself derives from Latin and Ancient Greek meaning 'wind' or 'breeze,' a classical metaphor extended in esotericism to denote an invisible surrounding emanation.

In occult and New Age descriptions the aura is presented as a colored emanation or glowing contour surrounding a body or object; writers variously describe layers, rainbow-like centers aligned with chakras, or intricate shapes whose colors and sizes correspond to moral, spiritual, emotional, or health states. Leadbeater's late-19th/early-20th-century illustrations depict complex, multicolored auras tied to stages of moral development; later popular accounts simplify these into readable color schemes. Photographic claims (e.g., Kirlian corona images or commercially marketed 'aura photography') show corona-like or heat-related contours under specific physical conditions, but those photographic effects have been attributed to moisture, ionization, and infrared emission rather than to a metaphysical layer.

Sources present the aura primarily as diagnostic and reflective rather than agentive: it is said to indicate a person's health, personality, moral or spiritual development, and emotional condition. Practitioners such as psychics, clairvoyants, and energy healers claim to perceive and interpret auras—reading color, size, and 'vibration'—and to manipulate or 'clear' auric energy through practices framed as healing (chakra clearing, energy medicine) or protective (developing an 'auric energy shield' in yoga). Scientific tests of claimed aura perception have repeatedly failed to produce reliable verification, and photographic methods purported to capture auras have natural physical explanations.
