Ayida Wedo

In the cosmology reflected in the sources, Ayida Wedo preexists the Earth and, often paired with Damballa, assisted the creator deity Mawu-Lisa in the formation of the world. Mythic texts describe the serpent as instrumental in shaping the cosmos and as a world-bearing presence that helps hold together Earth and sky; etymologies from Ewe/Fon point to a ‘great snake of the earth's edge,’ emphasizing liminal placement between earth and heavens.

Ayida Wedo is depicted as a great serpent and explicitly described as a 'Rainbow Serpent'—both rainbow and snake—often shown intertwined with Damballa in veve and drapo servis. Iconography and ritual practice associate her with blue and white (colors of sky and cloud); possessions of her manifest when mediums wear white cloth and jeweled headdresses and emulate serpentine movement by slithering on the ground. Visual portrayals vary regionally and may overlap with depictions of Damballa, who is often white (or black/white) and sometimes likewise rainbow-tinged.

Sources attribute cosmic, elemental, and life-affirming functions to Ayida Wedo. She is tied to water (springs, rivers, waterfalls) and to the rainbow; she also connects to other elements (air/wind, fire, earth) and in some accounts to thunder/lightning. Cosmologically she aided Mawu-Lisa in creating the world and is described as holding Earth and heavens together. Ayida Wedo is associated with wisdom, fertility, and love; offerings to her (often together with Damballa) are part of reciprocal ritual practice by which these blessings are sought. During possession she embodies serpentine movement and kinesthetic comportment.
