Bala Tripurasundari

In the Lalita Mahatmya section (chapter 26) of the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa Bala Tripurasundari appears as a youthful daughter-figure of Tripura Sundari who requests permission to engage in battle against the asura Bhandasura's forces. Tripura Sundari grants her armour and weapons, and Bala proceeds to slay the thirty sons of Bhandasura, an episode that frames her as both filial figure and martial agent within the Purāṇic narrative.

Sources describe Bala Tripurasundari as bearing the appearance of a child — commonly noted as a nine-year-old — and generally represented as a small child in modern summaries. Supplied references emphasize this youthful form but do not provide a standardized iconographic inventory beyond the childlike age and demeanor.

Two connected roles are prominent in the sources. In the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa narrative she demonstrates martial prowess, receiving armour and weapons from Tripura Sundari and slaying thirty asuric sons. In Śrī Vidyā tantric practice she serves as a tutelary goddess: she is the focus of kavach (protective hymn), mala-mantra recitation, Pancharathnam devotional compositions, and related sādhanā directed at protection, blessing, and support of the practitioner.
