The name derives from the Dalakit (also called Balete or Dakit) tree: Dalaketnon/Dalakitnon means literally 'from the Dalakit/Dakit tree.' Sources describe them as a distinct, noble lineage among the engkanto who dwell in Dalakit trees; those tree‑dwellings are presented as their otherworldly mansions and as the portal to their realm. Accounts place them within the broader unseen realm of Philippine spirits, positioned socially as an elitist or aristocratic engkanto caste and, in some descriptions, leaders among malevolent spirit lineages.

Traditional descriptions depict Dalaketnon as elf‑like and strikingly attractive, likened to nobles or monarchs of pre‑Hispanic Philippines. Some accounts note sexual dimorphism (men with light skin and dark hair; women with bronze‑brown skin and brown hair) and leaf‑shaped pointy ears. Modern portrayals amplify their aristocratic fashion—regal or Spanish principalía style clothing—and add Gothic stylings; certain contemporary sources mention dramatic visual effects (e.g., hair and eyes turning white) when powers manifest, a detail found chiefly in recent media retellings rather than older ethnographic records.

Folkloric attributes emphasize social enchantment more than elemental cosmology: Dalaketnon host lavish feasts, maintain regular contact with humans who often do not recognize them as engkanto, abduct people to their world, and compel victims to eat black rice — consumption of which is said to place a human under their spell and make them captives or transformed into beings like themselves. Sources also report that they are hostile to benevolent engkanto and, in at least one account, are described as commanding or presiding over various malevolent creatures (Tiyanak, Aswang, Bal‑Bal, Wak Wak, Manananggal, Amalanhig, Tiktik). Additional abilities such as telekinesis, corporeal duplication, and the white‑hair/eye effect are attributed in contemporary popular culture treatments rather than documented traditional texts.
