Edern ap Nudd

Tradition presents Edern as a son of Nudd (Nudd/Nodens) and as sibling in that mythic dynastic network that includes Gwyn ap Nudd and Creiddylad; he appears in Welsh tales as one of Arthur's knights and in continental sources (e.g. Geoffrey of Monmouth, Wace, Prose Merlin) under Latinized/Old French forms. A medieval ecclesiastical tradition also records a Saint Edern, a monk of the late ninth century whose feast is given in some sources as 26 August (alternatively 31 August or 1 September), and two Welsh churches are dedicated to St Edern, indicating later local cultic association between the legendary figure and a saintly namesake.

The supplied sources offer little consistent physical description of Edern himself. Incidental motifs include his travelling with two companions in Geraint (a beautiful lady and a whip-brandishing dwarf) and, in The Dream of Rhonabwy, his command of a 'pure black troop' of Danish soldiers allied to Arthur — visual associations in narratives rather than detailed bodily description.

Edern is presented primarily as a capable warrior and leader within Arthurian narrative: listed among Arthur's retinue (Culhwch ac Olwen), commander of a black-clad troop and one of Arthur's counsellors in The Dream of Rhonabwy, and a celebrated tournament champion in Geraint son of Erbin. He participates in single combat, accepts courtly protocols of apology and reconciliation when defeated, and is integrated into court life (he is treated by the court physician Morgan Tud and accompanies Geraint thereafter). The sources do not ascribe overt supernatural powers to Edern himself; his significance is largely martial, dynastic, and social.
