Feilian

Primary literary attestations of Feilian appear in the Chu ci corpus (notably Li sao, and elsewhere in Jiu bian and Yuan you), where the being functions as a spirit-helper in visionary journeys. In later historiographic and commentarial texts the name Feilian is also attached to a figure in late-Shang narratives (a pursued minister associated with Di Xin in sources cited in Mengzi, Xinian, and Shiji). Over time southern/Chu wind-power traditions including Feilian were reconciled with and often equated to the Zhou/Taoist wind-deity Fengbo in Han and subsequent commentaries.

Commentators describe Feilian as a chimeric, winged creature. Descriptions vary: Jin Zhuo describes "a deer's body with a bird's head, horns, and a snake's tail, with markings like a leopard's spots"; Guo Pu equates Feilian with the "dragon sparrow" (head of a deer and body of a bird); Gao You calls it a winged beast with long fur; other summaries characterize it as a winged deer or a winged dragon-like creature. Common elements across accounts include wings or flying ability, deer-like elements (head or body), bird parts, sometimes horns, and a snake-like tail or spotted markings.

Feilian is consistently associated with mastery or control of winds in early commentaries (a sacred beast able to control winds). The Huainanzi presents Feilian as a creature one can ride into the spirit world "where nothing perishes," indicating role as a psychopomp or spirit-vehicle. In later identification with Fengbo the figure is said to "carry wind with him in a bag and stir up trouble." Mythic narratives also record Feilian as an antagonist restrained by culture-heroes (Houyi is said to keep Feilian in check) and as involved in broader legendary conflicts attached to Chiyou and the Yellow Emperor cycle. Han imperial practice linked Feilian to immortality-seeking cultic activity (Emperor Wu dedicated buildings to Feilian hoping for longevity).
