Good Witch of the North (Baum)

In Baum's original 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz the figure appears simply as the Good Witch of the North, presented as an established local ruler of the Gillikin Country rather than as a newly-originated sorceress; Baum's novel does not provide a biographical origin or personal naming for her. Later stage/adaptation texts (the 1902 stage version and subsequent retellings) supplied names such as Locasta/Locusta and Tattypoo, while the 1939 film conflated the northern Good Witch's public role with Glinda (Baum's Good Witch of the South), producing divergent origin/identity traditions in popular culture.

Baum's novel portrays her as elderly, mild-mannered, and plain-looking, the understated ruler of the Gillikin Country. Stage versions and later popular adaptations introduced alternative costuming and names (Locasta/Locusta/Tattypoo). The 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film presents the glamorous Glinda in the role commonly remembered as the 'Good Witch of the North,' a substantial visual departure from Baum's plain, elderly depiction.

In Baum's text the Good Witch provides counsel, protection, and limited helpful magic to Dorothy: she greets Dorothy on arrival in Oz, performs a magical blessing/protection, and advises Dorothy to seek the Wizard at the Emerald City because the witch herself does not know how to return Dorothy to Kansas. She functions as a provincial, benevolent authority and guide rather than an omnipotent force; adaptations vary in the scope and display of her powers. Sources of later fandom speculate about jurisdictional changes (e.g., replacement of wicked northern figures) but such claims are inconsistent across primary summaries.
