Gordāfarīd

In the narrative of Ferdowsi’s Shāhnāmeh, Gordāfarīd is introduced as a defender of the White Fortress (Dezh-e Sepid) during a Turanian advance led by Sohrab. Angered by perceived cowardice among her own ranks, she equips herself and rides out to meet the enemy; she is described in the sources as the daughter of the warrior Gazhdaham in manuscript and character lists of the Shahnameh tradition. Her intervention delays the Turanian attack and allows Iranian forces time to prepare, and although she is defeated in single combat by Sohrab, he admires her courage and spares her life.
