Hedjhotep

Hedjhotep's earliest attestations appear in Middle Kingdom Coffin Texts (spells 779 and 908). Epigraphic and onomastic evidence suggests a localized cult in Middle Egypt (possible origins east of the Faiyum at el Lahun and onomastic concentrations near Heracleopolis). In later periods he is syncretized with Shu and identified as a son of Ra, a development that presents him mythically as an early inventor of clothing or 'first to have dressed the naked' in late theological reinterpretations.

Sources record limited iconography: Hedjhotep is sometimes described as female rather than male in some texts and is depicted holding a wadj-sceptre and an ankh sign. No consistent animal attributes, crown, or standardized anthropomorphic details are supplied in the cited material; iconography is otherwise sparse and varies across periods.

Textual evidence attributes to Hedjhotep the creation and provision of garments for the king, gods, and the deceased, roles framed in funerary literature as contributing to proper restoration or revival of the dead (e.g., Coffin Text contexts). In the New Kingdom he is invoked with Shezmu in medical contexts (treatments for headache and stomach-ache) and is described as responsible for the cords of amulets, indicating a technical role in amulet manufacture and unguent preparation. A New Kingdom papyrus presents an ambivalent portrayal in which Hedjhotep is beneficial as a clothing god but also commits an offence against Montu (an episode of transgression noted in the sources). Across Late Period, Ptolemaic, and Roman art he appears in syncretic family scenes (e.g., replacing Horus as Isis's son) and in priestly/administrative contexts connected to clothing provision.
