Herobrine

The figure originated in anonymous online posts (notably an early 4chan account) describing a single-player Minecraft encounter in which the player saw a second player-like character with solid white eyes staring from fog and then vanishing. The tale was amplified by livestreamed 'sightings', edited videos, and community embellishments; later community contributions added backstories (including an apocryphal claim linking Herobrine to the developer's family) and playable mods. Developers (Mojang; Notch) repeatedly denied that Herobrine existed in official game code and have both debunked and playfully referenced the legend (for example by joking 'Removed Herobrine' in changelogs), which itself became part of the folklore.

Depicted essentially as Minecraft's default player model (the 'Steve' avatar) but with solid white, pupil-less eyes; this white-eyed Steve is the central and consistent visual motif used in screenshots, texture edits, fan art, wallpapers, and mods linked to the legend.

Folklore accounts and community-created content attribute to Herobrine a range of disruptive behaviors: constructing anomalous structures in a player's world, removing tree leaves, digging tunnels or otherwise altering the landscape, appearing briefly in fog or at a distance to stare before vanishing, and in some narratives sending cryptic messages (an early reported forum message said 'stop'). Many additional mechanics (regular timed occurrences, scripted hostile actions) are features of player-made mods and staged media rather than elements of the official game.
