Kabumpo, the Elegant Elephant of Pumperdink

Kabumpo is introduced as a resident and courtly official of the fictional Kingdom of Pumperdink within the Oz series. He first appears as a named character in Ruth Plumly Thompson's Kabumpo in Oz (1922) and thereafter recurs in several of Thompson's Oz novels and later continuations. His 'origin' is literary: a creation of Thompson situated in the preexisting cosmology of Oz where sentient, speaking animals hold social and political roles.

Consistently described as the 'Elegant Elephant,' Kabumpo is an elephant who dresses in courtly clothing—examples include a silk robe of state—and is presented as fashion-conscious and dignified. Narratives emphasize his pompous, well-groomed appearance appropriate to a court attendant and dignitary.

Within the Oz stories Kabumpo speaks, reasons, travels across Oz, attends court, and acts as an adventuring companion and sometimes protagonist. He conveys characters between places in Oz (for example, whisking adventurers to the Emerald City) and functions socially as a wise if overbearing and vain courtier who participates in plot-driving journeys and interactions with other named Oz personages.
