Kullervo

Born to the Kalervo/Kaleva clan after a massacre of his kin, Kullervo is the sole surviving scion whose pregnant mother was taken into the household of the slayer Untamo. From early infancy (in the Kalevala he is described as vowing revenge at three months old) he survives multiple attempts on his life by drowning, burning, and hanging; these survivals are attributed in the sources to his latent magical powers. Sold into slavery and repeatedly mistreated, his life-course follows enslavement, recurrent humiliation, eventual escape or return as a warrior-messenger of vengeance, and final suicide after killing his enemy's people and discovering he has unwittingly seduced his sister in some variants.

The tradition provides no fixed physical portrait of Kullervo; instead he is described through life-stage and narrative motifs: a threatened infant saved by magic, a slave boy given a stone-baked loaf, a herder of cattle, a fierce youth and warrior carrying out bloody vengeance, and finally a self-destroyed man. Specific narrative items associated with him include the stone-baked loaf given by Untamo's household (or Ilmarinen's wife's household in later episodes) and various domestic and martial settings (household slave, battlefield), but no sustained description of bodily traits such as height, hair colour, or dress is supplied in the cited materials.

Sources attribute to Kullervo latent magical powers that preserve him in infancy and later enable extraordinary destructive acts. Runic songs report he had the ability to control fire (one motif describes enemies throwing him into a bonfire but he survives and controls fire). In the Kalevala he survives three attempts at infanticide and later uses magical skill to destroy Untamo and his tribe; narrative fragments also record quasi-magical outcomes tied to his actions (for example, spear-breaking incidents producing unexpected effects). Behaviorally, he is driven by a relentless vengeance for his slaughtered kin, a fierce temper, cruelty when tormented (driving off cattle; summoning beasts in some variants), and acts that culminate in incestuous tragedy and suicide.
