Periphas

Periphas is not a single origin story but a name that recurs in multiple genealogical and narrative contexts of Greek myth. Notable bearers include: (1) a legendary king of Attica, husband of Phene, who in one tradition earns Zeus' attention and is transformed by Zeus into an eagle; (2) one of the sons of Aegyptus who married (and was slain by) a Danaid on their wedding night; (3) a son of Aretus who fought against Dionysus in the Indian War; (4) an Aetolian prince, son of Oeneus; (5) members of Lapith genealogies and combatants at the Lapith–Centaur wedding episodes; (6) minor martial figures in Trojan War narratives and companions of Neoptolemus; (7) a suitor of Penelope from Zacynthus; and (8) a herald of Aeneas. These disparate attestations reflect onomastic reuse rather than a single biographical tradition.

No single physical description unites the various Periphas figures. Descriptions are character-specific: the Attic king Periphas is said, after Zeus' metamorphosis, to appear as an eagle; other bearers are presented as ordinary human princes, warriors, suitors, or heralds with no consistent anthropological or monstrous traits reported in the surveyed sources.

Capabilities and behaviours vary by individual figure. Most Periphas figures are ordinary mortals (princes, warriors, suitors, heralds) participating in social, familial, or martial roles. The Attic king's transformation into an eagle is an event enacted by Zeus rather than an inherent power of the name-holder; other entries record combatant behaviour (fighting against Dionysus, participation in the Trojan War) or victimhood (slain by a Danaid), but no consistent supernatural abilities are ascribed across the name-bearers in available sources.
