Origin

Ra-Horakhty arises from the Egyptian tendency toward theological syncretism: Ra, already central by the Fifth Dynasty and identified with the noon-day sun and rulership over sky, earth, and the underworld, was merged with Horus in his role as lord of the horizons. The compounded name — often rendered Re-Hor-achti or translated as "Ra who is Horus of the Two Horizons" — encodes the conceptual union of Ra's solar sovereignty and Horus's horizon/royal associations, reflecting both solar theology and the ideology that links cosmic order (maat) to kingship.

Appearance

Across the attested iconography the composite is represented by Horus's falcon imagery combined with Ra's solar disk: specifically, Re-Hor-achti is symbolized as a falcon bearing the sun-disc on its head. Late-period/Ptolemaic material also attests variants of Ra-Harakhty imagery (for example a Ptolemaic bronze titled "Ra-Harakhty with Ma'at feather"), indicating that later depictions sometimes include additional attributes linking the deity to Ma'at (order/truth), though the core visual formula remains falcon + sun-disc.

Abilities

As a syncretic form of Ra and Horus, Ra-Horakhty embodies solar rulership, the visible authority of the sun (especially at midday), and legitimating power for kingship. Sources describe Ra as "the god of the Sun, order, kings and the sky" who "ruled in all parts of the created world: the sky, the Earth, and the underworld." The composite therefore functions across cosmic domains — daylight sky, terrestrial rulership, and the sun's nocturnal passage through the underworld — and emphasizes the sun's cyclical journey at the eastern and western horizons as a principle of cosmic and political order.
