Shobijin

First introduced in the 1961 film Mothra, the Shobijin are depicted as the tiny twin priestesses of Mothra who represent Infant Island and speak on the giant moth's behalf. In the Showa-era films they recur as the authorized intermediaries who, through ritual song and presence, summon or negotiate with Mothra on behalf of humans or their own island people. Across sequels and later adaptations the twin-fairy archetype endures: different sets of performers have represented the Shobijin in subsequent films (for example, The Peanuts in the early Showa films and Pair Bambi in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep), and updated versions (such as named twins in the 2023 Chibi Godzilla Raids Again series) continue the role as friends and priestly companions to Mothra-like figures.

The Shobijin are consistently described as tiny, miniature humanoid twin fairies — literally named 小美人 (Shōbijin), often translated as "little beauties." On-screen portrayals emphasize matched twin singers rather than highly detailed costume inventories: the Showa-era films cast real-life twin musical performers (notably The Peanuts, Emi and Yumi Ito, in the first three films, and Pair Bambi in later entries), giving them a paired, singing-oriented visual identity. Their scale is repeatedly presented as markedly smaller than humans, and their paired, identical presentation (twin duos) is central to their depiction and ritual function.

Sources present the Shobijin primarily as ritual specialists and mediators: they sing signature songs (for example, the motif often referred to as "Daughters of Infant Island") and function as Mothra's authorized emissaries who can summon, communicate with, and direct the guardian moth through song and ritual speech. While the Shobijin themselves are not portrayed as combatants or as wielding the world-scale destructive powers of Mothra, their ritual role allows them to call or influence that greater being; some continuities and adaptations vary in presentation, but the consistent trait across sources is their status as priestesses whose vocal rites are the chief instrument of agency.
