Shitalanatha

Traditional Jain accounts present Shitalanatha as the tenth of twenty-four Tirthankaras in the current cosmic cycle. He was born at Bhaddilpur to King Dradhrath and Queen Nanda of the Ikshvaku dynasty. As with other Tirthankaras, his life is narrated in Jain universal history using mythic temporal measures (sources record symbolic figures for lifespan and cosmic intervals). He renounced worldly life, practiced severe asceticism, attained omniscience (Kevala Jnana), taught the dharma for a lengthy period, and ultimately achieved moksha (liberation) on Mount Shikharji, after which he is regarded as a siddha (liberated soul).

Shitalanatha is traditionally depicted in a meditative seated posture and described as having a golden physical complexion. Iconographic emblems vary by sect: Digambara sources associate him with the kalpavriksha (wishing tree) and by some accounts with a svastika variant as emblematic marks, while Śvētāmbara tradition identifies the śrīvatsa mark as his symbol. He is shown flanked by śaśan-devatas (attendant guardian deities): the male attendant is identified as Brahma in both traditions, while the female attendant differs by sect (Manavi in Digambara; Ashoka in Śvētāmbara).

As a Tirthankara, Shitalanatha's 'abilities' are spiritual rather than magical: he renounced worldly life, attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience), preached the Jain path (tirtha), and attained moksha, becoming a siddha free from all karmic bondage. Sources for Shitalanatha do not describe hostile powers or miraculous feats beyond the standard Tirthankara roles.
