Al Pratt first appeared as the Atom in All-American Comics #19 (October 1940). Early origin accounts portray him as a young, diminutive college student (attending Calvin College in some tellings) who, after encountering street crime (commonly a muggers' incident that catalyzed his crimefighting), trained himself into a tough pugilist and adopted the costumed identity of the Atom to combat criminals. Later continuity and retellings placed him in organized teams such as the Justice Society of America and All‑Star Squadron; some later stories retconned that he acquired short‑lived radiation‑linked power enhancements (e.g., thorium exposure) after his initial non‑superpowered period.

Sources consistently describe Al Pratt as short in stature — diminutive or stocky — a defining visual trait contrasted with his toughness. In Golden Age depictions he wears a simple period superhero costume associated with the Atom persona (classic Golden Age styling rather than elaborate modern designs). Adaptations (for example the Smallville "Absolute Justice" depiction) place him later as an older figure and portray him wearing era‑appropriate civilian clothes such as a physics professor's attire when not costumed.
