Calcabrina

Calcabrina appears in Dante Alighieri's Inferno as one of the Malebranche assigned to guard the fifth bolgia of the eighth circle (Malebolge) where grafters are punished. The figure originates in this literary context; later uses in video games and fiction borrow the name and rework the being into various guardian/enemy archetypes.

Dante's text and the provided summaries give little specific physical portrait of Calcabrina beyond membership among the Malebranche — malignant, winged jailers/demons. Modern adaptations offer varied visualizations: RuneScape presents Calcabrina as a gargoyle-like guardian, while Final Fantasy XIV depicts a doll-like construct (a Soulkin/voidsent guardian). These later images are adaptations not descriptions from the original poem.

In Dante's narrative Calcabrina functions as an enforcer and pursuer: he escorts Dante and Virgil among the Malebranche, pursues an escaping sinner (Bonturo Dati), quarrels with the devil Alichino, and — as narrated — falls into the boiling pitch used to punish grafters. Those are narrative actions in the poem. Game adaptations present Calcabrina as a combatant guardian (attacking/defensive mechanics, levelled enemy behavior) specific to each game's mechanics.
