In Jewish apocryphal literature, the Chalkydri are part of the celestial realm and associated with the solar cycle. They are described as a mythical, angelic species.
Chalkydri have 12 wings, the head of a crocodile, the feet and tail of a lion, and coloration like the rainbow. They are approximately 900 measures in size.
Chalkydri bring heat and dew as 'flying elements of the Sun'. They engage in a daily ritual with their counterparts, singing at sunrise to signal to birds of the world to rejoice.
