The figure appears in late-medieval and post-medieval popular imagination as a familial elder attached to the Devil; source summaries indicate that the Devil's primary female relative in German-speaking lore shifted historically (scholarly/folk-historical commentary notes: Teufels Mutter attested c.12th–15th centuries, Lilith prominent until the 17th century, after which the grandmother-figure becomes common). Some regional traditions (notably the North German 'die alte Frick') link the character to older, possibly pre-Christian figures (scholarly commentary identifies a possible connection with the Norse goddess Frigg and with Wild Hunt motifs). These points derive from collected folklore summaries rather than a single canonical origin narrative.

Accounts vary by context. In Brothers Grimm tales she is described succinctly as a 'very aged woman' who aids protagonists. Bergisches Land sabbath imagery records a twofold appearance: as a luminous, queenly presider (youthful beauty, golden apple, throne illuminating the forest, Devil at her feet) and as a hideous true form revealed when viewed through a pierced copper coin (dirty pig's tails used as an aspergillum, hair of lizards and snakes, mice running about a pointed bony chin). Regional Old Frick tales portray her as a mighty subterranean sorceress and man-eater, sometimes covered in fur in cinematic depiction (Häxan) and accompanied by monstrous, fire-spouting dogs.

In fairy tales she intervenes to assist mortals—examples in Grimm tales include providing solutions to riddles and obtaining three golden hairs from the sleeping Devil—indicating narrative agency to counteract curses and to act upon the Devil's person within tale logic. In regional sabbath lore she presides over nocturnal gatherings (Walpurgis Night, Midsummer Night), anoints witches from a golden basin, and holds ritual leadership functions. Other traditions ascribe to her control over dangerous landscape phenomena (an Austrian tale has her ordering her palace sunk into the Danube, creating a perilous maelstrom) and command of fearsome supernatural entourage (fire-spouting dogs). The dual appearance motif implies either the capacity for deceptive glamour or an ability for observers to be enchanted unless they use a diagnostic charm.
