Shumbha and Nishumbha

In the Uttama Charitra (Chapters 5–13) of the Devi Māhātmya the brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha undertake severe penance (tapas) at Pushkara for ten thousand years. Pleased, the creator deity Brahmā grants them a boon that no man, deva, or asura can destroy them. Empowered by this boon, they and their armies seize dominance over the three worlds.
