Ego the Living Planet

Publication and creator accounts present multiple origin accounts within fiction and creator commentary. Jack Kirby described creating Ego to explore the idea of a living planet; in-fiction explanations vary, including claims that a scientist merged with a planet when its sun went nova and other speculative cosmic processes. The character was introduced in Thor #132 (Sept. 1966) and has been reinterpreted in later comics and on-screen (MCU) adaptations.

Depictions vary by story. The first published image (Thor #132) used a full-page photo-collage showing human facial features superimposed on a bulbous, chaotic planetoid. Later comics portray Ego as a planet-form organism with identifiable regions used in plots (a 'brain' region, poles to which machinery can be attached) and occasionally manifesting humanoid minions (e.g., 'Anti-body' constructs). Visual presentation shifts with narrative needs between a whole planetary body and focused anatomical or engineered features.

Across stories Ego is portrayed as a self-aware planetary organism capable of deliberate action: absorbing spacecraft, planets, and beings; creating autonomous minions; regenerating or reforming from surviving particles; controlling or seizing attached machinery (such as a propulsion engine affixed to a pole); and attempting to absorb energies from cosmic-powered beings. Behavior in narratives ranges from conquest and vengeance (notably in the Black Galaxy) to cooperative or grateful acts toward allies; external influences in various issues have driven Ego to irrational or maddened states.
