Hantu

Hantu is not a single mythic progenitor but a lexical category in Malay and Indonesian traditions that names a range of unseen agents. In traditional animistic contexts the term covered spirits of the dead, ancestral souls, and various nature spirits; its etymology traces to Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qanitu and Proto-Austronesian *qaNiCu and is cognate with spirit/ancestor terms across Austronesian languages (for example, Filipino anito, Micronesian aniti, Bunun hanitu/hanidu, and Polynesian aitu/atua). Rather than describing an origin event, the term indexes a cultural cosmology in which multiple classes of nonhuman persons co-exist and interact with humans.

As a category, hantu do not have a single fixed appearance; specific named types carry their own visual descriptions in folklore. Folktale accounts sometimes describe Hantu Raya's true form as humanoid in certain tales, while Hantu Tinggi (literally 'Tall Ghost') is explicitly described in sources as so tall that its body above the waist is hidden by clouds. Other popular or modern summaries describe hantu in varied colors and sizes, but such portrayals come from contemporary media and blogs rather than primary ethnographic description.

Abilities and behaviors differ by subtype and local tale. Traditional usage encompasses ancestral spirits and nature beings whose actions depend on role and context. Folkloric descriptions identify Hantu Raya as a familiar spirit or double that serves black magic practitioners and is said to bestow power on its master. Modern popular accounts (contemporary blogs) attribute more sensational powers—such as complete soul replacement during possession—but these claims are not corroborated in the primary folkloric summaries provided and should be treated as modern interpretations.
