Orang Minyak

Variants of the origin appear across sources. In cinematic and some popular tellings (for example the 1958 film Sumpah Orang Minyak), the figure is a man cursed after making a pact with a devil-like force and granted powers of the black arts; some film narratives add conditions such as a requirement to rape a number of virgins to retain power. Other accounts present the Orang Minyak as a human warlock, shaman, or a person under the control of a witch doctor. Newspaper reports and folkloric reports from the 1950s onward mark the legend's rise in public attention; film adaptations from 1958 onward popularized curse-and-pact origin motifs. Academic and skeptical commentary notes that some reports reflect criminals imitating the legend rather than genuine supernatural activity.

Commonly described as a male, human-shaped figure coated with shiny black grease. Early tellings sometimes describe the coating as hair oil; other versions specify coconut oil mixed with soot; modern film variants frequently depict crude oil, reflecting industrial imagery. Accounts disagree on clothing — some reports describe the Orang Minyak as naked, while others note it wearing a dark pair of swimming trunks. The greasy surface is emphasized as making the figure slippery and difficult to seize.

Folkloric claims attribute nocturnal predation on young women (often virgins) and a capacity to evade capture because of its slippery, greasy coating; stories say it can climb walls and grab victims at night. Sources present both supernatural explanations (curses, black arts) and human explanations (evil warlock, witch-doctor control, or criminals imitating the figure by covering themselves in oil). Skeptical observers note the implausibility of some physical feats ascribed in legend (for example maintaining grip or climbing while coated in grease) and emphasize that many contemporary incidents involved ordinary criminals using the Orang Minyak image.
