Andrea Beaumont (the Phantasm)

Andrea Beaumont is introduced in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm as the daughter of Carl Beaumont who once was romantically engaged to Bruce Wayne. After the engagement is broken and her father flees to Europe, Andrea ultimately becomes an assassin/vigilante driven by personal trauma and a retributive code of justice. Creators conceived her as a femme fatale and "the girl who got away" — a narrative device meant to present an alternative path to Bruce Wayne's transformation into Batman, with Andrea choosing lethal vengeance where Bruce rejects killing. The character was based loosely on Judson Caspian (the Reaper) and his daughter Rachel from the "Batman: Year Two" comics, and was intentionally designed to evoke archetypal Death imagery to thematically contrast with Batman.

As Andrea Beaumont in civilian guise she is presented as a 1940s‑styled Gotham socialite: red hair in a long bob, fitted "sweater girl" tops, high‑waisted pencil skirts, wrap dresses and pumps (design references by Bruce Timm). As the Phantasm she wears a hooded, tall and gaunt costume that intentionally recalls Grim Reaper/Ghost of Christmas Future archetypes; a metal skull‑like mask completes the visage, and she carries a scythe‑like large blade in her right hand. Her masked presentation is accompanied in the film by an eerie theremin‑heavy musical theme.

The Phantasm is a human assassin/vigilante who employs intimidation, stealth, theatrical staging, and lethal force according to a personal retributive code (described in sources as a warped "eye for an eye"). Her apparently supernatural feats—vanishing, seeming intangibility, and spectral appearances—are produced or enhanced by practical devices and theatrics. Notably, her left glove contains a chemically based fog‑generating device used for stealth, combat and to create the illusion of a ghostly presence. The Phantasm's recorded voice in the film is a masculine performance by Stacy Keach that was digitally altered (deepened and echoed) in post‑production; this vocal design is auditory theatrical effect rather than an innate supernatural property. Creators cited influences such as Mysterio (for fog/illusion tactics) and classic death imagery in crafting her methods and aesthetic.
