Gudula (Saint Gudula of Brabant)

According to an 11th-century Vita (Vita Gudilae) by Onulfus of Hautmont, Gudula was born around 646 in the pagus of Brabant, daughter of Witger and Saint Amalberga, educated under Gertrude of Nivelles, and led a life of prayer and almsgiving. She received the veil from Saint Aubert (as attested in the Vita), died between ca. 680 and 714 (most frequently cited as 712), and was subsequently venerated; her relics were translated to churches including a chapel in Brussels and later the church of Saint Michael (the cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula).

No contemporary physical description of Gudula's living appearance is preserved in the sources. In later iconography and seals she is characteristically depicted holding a candle or a lamp (a 1446 seal of the Church of St. Gudula shows her with a candle in her right hand and a lamp in her left while a demon attempts to extinguish the light). The candle/lantern motif is the principal visual attribute associated with her.

As a Christian saint she is venerated for devout prayer, charitable almsgiving, and posthumous intercession via relics; the corpus records no inherent supernatural powers apart from standard hagiographic motifs. A recurring legendic episode recounts that when a demon tried to extinguish her light as she went to church before cock-crow, God enabled her lantern to be rekindled—this functions as a narrative illustration of divine protection rather than an autonomous magical faculty of the saint.
