Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin

Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin is attested in Mahāyāna sutras and tantric literature rather than in a localized mythic birth narrative. In the Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra he is described as the bodhisattva who, on the Buddha's instructions, obtains Avalokiteśvara's mantra; he also appears across tantric texts such as the Vairocanābhisaṃbodhi Sūtra, establishing him as a textual and ritual agent in sutra and tantra corpora.

Sources provide limited iconographic detail: he is often depicted holding a flower in one hand and sometimes also a wishing gem (cintāmaṇi). Beyond these attributes the supplied materials give only sparse notes on anthropomorphic form.

Literally named 'He who blocks all the hindrances' (sarva nivāraṇa + viṣkambhin), Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin's primary function is the removal or elimination of obstacles to successful meditation and spiritual practice. He is associated with specific mantras and dhāraṇīs (recorded in the Vairocanābhisaṃbodhi Sūtra and the Dharanisamgraha) used to purify 'sinful coverings' and clear impediments. Textually he acts as an obtainer and transmitter of mantra-power (e.g., in the Kāraṇḍavyūha narrative pertaining to Avalokiteśvara's mantra). In tantric contexts he is placed in the lineage of Amoghasiddhi (and more rarely Akshobhya) and is sometimes—apparently by confusion in some sources—associated or compared with Vajrapāṇi.
