Zadkiel

In the angelological and mystical literature surveyed, Zadkiel is an exalted heavenly agent whose name (Hebrew צִדְקִיאֵל, Ṣīḏqīʾēl) links the figure to divine righteousness. The being appears in summaries of Jewish and Christian angelology as an archangel of mercy and kindness; in Kabbalistic schemata Zadkiel is placed in the fourth sephirah, Chesed, and is associated with the classical planet Jupiter. Some sources assert that Zadkiel is the unnamed 'Angel of the Lord' who intervenes in the Binding of Isaac narrative; other sources propose alternative identifications (for example Michael or Tadhiel) or interpret the figure as a theophany, and thus the Aqedah attribution is presented in the literature as disputed.

Primary theological and mystical sources do not provide an extended or consistent physical description of Zadkiel. Iconographically, however, popular summaries and art traditions often depict the angel in connection with the Binding of Isaac motif and note that he is "usually shown holding a dagger," an artistic symbol linked to the Abraham narrative. Modern fictional and gaming materials supply varied imaginative portrayals, but these are separate from the traditional theological descriptions and are not treated as primary source evidence.

Sources consistently attribute to Zadkiel the moral and functional qualities of kindness, benevolence, mercy, and forgiveness; Wikidata also describes him as associated with freedom and as the patron angel of those who forgive. In Kabbalistic and mystical frameworks Zadkiel's placement in Chesed and correspondence with Jupiter situates him within a cosmological system tying moral attributes to sephirotic and planetary functions. Some texts identify Zadkiel with the angel who restrains Abraham from sacrificing Isaac, attributing to him an intervening, merciful action in human affairs; the identification with that specific biblical angel is noted as contested in the literature.
