Jack Pumpkinhead

In The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904) the boy Tip assembles a humanoid body from tree limbs, joints it with wooden pegs, outfits it with old clothes taken from the witch Mombi, and fits it with a large carved pumpkin for a head. When Mombi elects to test her Powder of Life on the figure rather than destroy it, the powder animates the construct and it becomes Jack Pumpkinhead. His life is sustained by the same magic that animates other non-human inhabitants of Oz.

Jack is described as a very tall, thin figure made from tree limbs jointed with wooden pegs, wearing old clothes (in the origin account: purple trousers, a red shirt, a pink vest with white polka dots, and stockings, with a pair of shoes taken by Tip). His head is a large carved jack-o'-lantern; Baum's text notes that pumpkin seeds and pulp were left inside the head and are said to 'substitute for his brain.' In later books he lives in a large pumpkin-shaped house and uses a Sawhorse as transportation to spare his wooden joints.

Jack is animate, speaks, thinks, and participates socially and adventurously within Oz as a full person. His intelligence is playfully tied to the physical state of his pumpkin head — accounts state that his wit seems to depend on the quality and quantity of seeds in the pumpkin. He 'would not get tired from walking' though his wooden joints wear, prompting use of a Sawhorse; his pumpkin head will eventually spoil and must be replaced. Princess Ozma or others carve replacement heads and he grows pumpkins to supply them.
