Demon Cat

Legend places the Demon Cat's origin in the mid-1800s when cats were kept in the basement tunnels of the United States Capitol for rodent control. Folklore identifies the apparition as one of those basement cats that 'never left, even after its death,' and ties its supposed home to the Capitol's basement crypt. This account is presented as local legend rather than documented historical fact.

Accounts vary: baseline descriptions call it a black cat or a tabby about the size of a house cat. Folkloric retellings add a transformative element in which witnesses report the creature suddenly enlarging—described in some tellings as swelling to the size of a giant tiger or even an elephant (reports give dimensions such as 10 feet tall and 10 feet long). Additional legendary anecdotes include 19th-century episodes in which guards reportedly fired on an unseen animal and a later claim that a guard died of a heart attack after a sighting; these are reported as elements of the tale.

In the legend the Demon Cat manifests to security personnel and others in Capitol and White House spaces, sometimes appearing as a normal cat and sometimes expanding to enormous size when 'alerted.' Folklore describes the enlarged form as either exploding or lunging at observers and then vanishing before contact. The creature is popularly said to be seen as an omen—allegedly appearing before presidential elections and before tragedies, with folkloric claims of sightings the night before the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. A skeptical explanation cited in the sources suggests misperception (for example, intoxicated or sleeping guards startled by a cat) and social incentives among guards may account for many reports.
