Yuxa

In the recorded popular belief, snakes that reach great age undergo a metamorphosis: "According to popular beliefs, every 100‑year‑old snake is transformed into Yuxa." This motif frames Yuxa as an ontological threshold creature—originating in the natural world (aged snakes) and becoming a personlike, long‑lived supernatural agent within Turkic folk imagination.

Descriptions vary across tellings. In its nonhuman aspect Yuxa is described as having a dragon's head, a reptilian body, two legs (sometimes none), and a barbed tail; some accounts say it may be said to breathe fire or possess a venomous bite. In fairy‑tale contexts Yuxa can adopt fully human guises, appearing as a beautiful damsel or a handsome young man capable of marrying and begetting offspring.

Central capacities attributed to Yuxa include longevity and metamorphosis from an aged snake, and fluent shape‑changing between reptilian/dragonlike forms and attractive human male or female forms. Yuxa is portrayed as socially and sexually interactive—seducing or marrying humans and begetting descendants in tales.
